The Power of Small Works

And the Art of Noticing

Sometimes we are completely surprised by what we notice. I've noticed things lately that have been in plain sight for, well who knows really, but probably a long while. I never saw them until I began noticing.

It makes me stop and think about what I am missing on a daily basis because I am trying to get from here to there.

I adore color, the intensity of color even when is it subtle and subdued still packs a punch. I set out a few months ago to really explore color, what colors I regularly choose, to choose colors I wouldn’t normally choose and explore why I may not like them or learn that I do.

Color is a very personal journey. We gravitate to certain colors and shy away from others, but I wonder if just like with people, if we can learn to love orange for example we can open ourselves to the possibility of growth.

So I began a color study and honestly, so far, I haven’t really chosen colors I don’t care for. For me color has a sense to it, some feel itchy and smell funny and others are soft and smell fresh.

A weekly exploration of color

  • Cut 6” x 6” square canvases

  • Choose 3 colors plus white

  • Set a Timer

  • Explore color mixing and mark making

I think the more I notice the more beautiful life becomes. Color is a gateway for healing, happiness, emotions, expression, a voice without words, stillness, movement and on and on. What colors do you love and what colors make your face crinkle?
